The Hub City Railroad Museum is located in the historic Southern Railway Depot at 298 Magnolia Street in Spartanburg. Learn about the historic development of railroading in Spartanburg and the Upstate of South Carolina. Take a step back into history and acquire knowledge about how the railroads were connected to the textile and peach industries. Check out the display about the Hayne Car Shops that once employed 1,100 shopmen to maintain Southern Railway’s fleet of railroad passenger and freight cars. Become a telegrapher with the operating telegraph system and acquire the knowledge of how to dial an old telephone. Ring the 1950s locomotive bell and blow the Southern Railway steam locomotive whistle. Discover the history of the only operating railroad tunnel in South Carolina.
Visit the Museum gift shop for railroad themed and historical items, including clothing, books, videos, magazines, and many other items. The Southern Railway Caboose and the Trackside Observation Deck are available for you to watch and photograph the Norfolk Southern Railway and Amtrak trains that pass by the depot. The Caboose gift shop has model train items of various scales at very reasonable prices. The inventory changes periodically, as we receive donations.
